SAFERVETS® founder and director
Dr Louisa Johnson
BVSc (Hons), MANZCVS (Small Animal Medicine), Cert IV TAE, Cert IV WHS. Masters of OHS.
Louisa graduated from the University of Melbourne Vet School in 2001, and has worked in small animal practice in both Australia and Hong Kong. She is an ANZCVS member in Small Animal Medicine and has both mentored and examined candidates for this chapter. Louisa has a Cert IV in Training and Assessment and is experienced with developing and delivering adult education content, having previously been employed with Open Colleges in delivering the Cert IV in Veterinary Nursing course, teaching Workplace Health and Safety and other subjects. During her veterinary career she has worked in health and safety roles within clinics, and also previously assisted with an Australian Veterinary Association safety project, in 2017.
In 2023, Louisa completed a Masters of Occupational Health and Safety with Curtin University. She completed a research dissertation titled ‘Frequency of workplace incidents and injuries in veterinarians, veterinary nurses and veterinary students and measures to control these’ was published in the Australian Veterinary Journal, June 2024 (read it here http://doi.org/10.1111/avj.13354).
Louisa is also undertaking additional research to expand the evidence-based body of knowledge available about OHS in the veterinary industry; such as a collaboration with Dr Kelly Johnstone from The University of Queensland looking at the isoflurane exposure levels experienced by veterinary staff undertaking anaesthetic work, which has been submitted for consideration for publication.
Louisa enjoys engaging with veterinary business owners and veterinary student educators to improve their health and safety policies, resources and training, and therefore contribute to better OHS outcomes for their teams.
